PROTECT. CONSERVE. INSPIRE.
THE ACADEMY
Here at Mounu Ocean Academy, we are driven by a three main goals; conserve the local marine environment, protect the majestic whales that call Tonga home and to educate and inspire the current and coming generations.
To achieve our goals we monitor our local reefs using established marine surveying techniques and teach these methods in our academy to maximise our marine monitoring team. Protecting the whales is of upmost importance to us and we help to do this by promoting sustainable and ethical whale tourism, organising regular marine debris clean-ups, collecting whale population and behaviour observational data and hosting whale and marine environment educational activity days with the local communities and visitors to Mounu Island.
We strive to build productive relationships and make a positive impact with all of our pursuits. The data collected through our marine academy supports the innovative citizen science organisations created by Reef Check, Coral Watch and The Ocean Cleanup. We also partner with VEPA (Vava'u Environmental Protection Association) to broaden our potential local community outreach.
